On Wilhemenia Pier, the Art Deco former headquarters of the Holland-America Line is now the Hotel New York; it's flanked by modern buildings by Sir Norman Foster and the Dutch firm Mecanoo. If you're looking for that idyllic version of a Dutch town - quaint canals, picturesque bridges, gabled Renaissance rowhouses - that isn't Rotterdam.
