Schettino defense makes closing remarks

Grosseto, February 5 - Defence layers representing Francesco Schettino said the former Costa Concordia captain had been 'ghettoed' during legal proceedings in relation to the partial capsizing of the cruiseliner after it hit rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32. "Captain Francesco Schettino has been legally ghettoed," said lawyer Donato Laino during closing arguments in the trial against the ex sailor for multiple manslaughter and dereliction of duty - charges for which the prosecution has requested a sentence of 26 years and Schettino's immediate arrest. "The prosecution has focused exclusively on him" while his co-defendants "have been awarded" with a plea bargain, Laino added.
